ABSTRACT

This book has been compiled as a tribute to one of the most influential figures in the psychology of human reasoning: Jonathan St B. T. Evans. It also happens to be an apposite moment to compile this volume, since the scientific study of reasoning has undergone a theoretical and methodological revolution in recent times. Even a decade ago, a volume such as this would have looked quite different. The developments in the field are paralleled by those in Jonathan’s own intellectual history. This is, of course, no accident: there has been a deep mutual influence between the Evans view of reasoning and the broader field. In this opening chapter, we shall offer an outline of the wider paradigm shift and also of Jonathan’s scientific biography. This will enable us to situate the 18 chapters contributed by researchers who have all worked either with Jonathan or in areas that he has been closely associated with or, in some cases, initiated.
