ABSTRACT
At the 2005 World Summit, the United Nations member states reaffirmed their commitment to the Millenium Goals for a Better World in the 21st Century (UN, 2010). Although there have been some advances since the turn of the century, by 2005 some 36 percent of the urban population in developing countries were living in slums lacking at least one of four basic amenities: durable housing; adequate living space; improved sanitation; and clean water. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region with the highest prevalence of slums. Some 63 percent of the population live in such settlements.
