ABSTRACT

In taking a step back by evaluating the approach taken by the German Handball Federation to identify and develop talent we hope to improve the system for an even brighter future for German handball. This case report gives an overview of what handball is, its importance in Germany and how talented handball players are typically selected. In the second section, the theoretical background of existing player assessment and evaluation is described. Third, the results of the last three years of evaluation are presented and conclusions related to the future of this program are drawn. These sections are highlighted by other findings of our work group, which suggest that changes in the system are necessary. Finally, we give advice for policy makers, coaches, parents and researchers.
