ABSTRACT

Writing enables us to explore and articulate our thoughts, and, as such, is a complex, cognitive function. Writing is also a social act. Effective writing requires one to make frequent and appropriate assessments of the draft in process in order to evaluate the relative quality of the text. During revising, writers solve composing problems and take corrective action when their writing is not meeting expectations. Therefore, the ability to evaluate and act to modify writing is an important skill that influences the rest of the composing process.
