ABSTRACT

Introduction: the new phenomenon of reproductive tourism What motivates the global movements of infertile people searching for assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs)? And who are the individuals who ‘assist’ the infertile in their global quests to become parents? These are questions to be addressed in this chapter, which focuses on the newly described phenomenon of ‘reproductive tourism’ – defi ned as

the travelling by candidate service recipients from one institution, jurisdiction or country where treatment is not available to another institution, jurisdiction or country where they can obtain the kind of medically assisted reproduction they desire. As such, it is part of the more general ‘medical tourism’.
