ABSTRACT

When considering how to train teachers to become good inclusive practitioners, a lot can be learned from the reading of Confucian philosophy. According to Confucius, in order to become a truly excellent teacher a person will need a relaxed, assured spirit and a respectful attitude (Yu, 2009). Confucius’s Jungzi or ideal person embodies both of these attributes, in particular exhibiting high morality and showing mutual respect for human dignity and tolerance towards others. To become a good inclusive teacher requires similar traits. How then can teacher educators facilitate the development of these qualities in their teachers? Confucius provides in the Analects a range of simple truths to allow people to make the right choices

believing that “the first step on this journey is having the right attitude” (Yu, 2006, 2009, p. 32).
