ABSTRACT

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) is a unique country, which over the last five decades has always placed as the top priority the development of a defence industry, irrespective of economic conditions. Although the defence sector progressed to the extent that North Korea was able to provide the military with domestically manufactured weapons and equipment, and sometimes earn hard currency revenue from arms sales abroad, the economy has suffered from structural problems, with North Korea plunging towards the status of a failed nation.
