ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are the main causes of morbidity and mortality (Kannel et al., 1984; Lloyd-Jones et al. , 2009). Evidence exists that many of these diseases begin in childhood (Enos et al., 1953; McNamara et al., 1971). It has been suggested that the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors in adolescents may be due in part to increasing trends in adolescent obesity and physical inactivity (Wang and Lobstein, 2006).
