An ongoing challenge for journalists with an interest in public journalism or other deliberative journalism is how to embed and sustain the ideas and practices within newsrooms. The issues that Australian journalists face are similar to those that have been observed among their counterparts in the United States. One challenge for many public journalism exponents lies in how to develop a set of news-gathering, reporting and editing practices that place journalists in the best position to support deliberation. Another is how to ensure that these practices and ideas are maintained after the projects have fi nished or the newsroom leaders who have instigated such activities move to new positions.
