ABSTRACT

Introduction The aim of writing this chapter is to question the perception that disability sport is unequivocally empowering and inherently inclusive for youth experiencing disability. We argue that sport can serve to both include and exclude young athletes and, furthermore, that there are a number of structural and socio-cultural factors that impact on the inclusion of youth experiencing disability. We will examine these issues on three interrelated planes: sport structures of inclusion/exclusion, experiences of inclusion/exclusion, and cultural contexts of inclusion/exclusion.
