ABSTRACT

This extraordinary article demonstrates the breadth of Laban’s interest in movement. We have seen that in the 1910s and 1920s Laban engaged in a similar breadth of activity, all of which centred upon dance. In Effort and Recovery, he argues that it was the theatre (and I think he means performance on stage, be it dance or theatre) that led to his interest in other forms of movement:

The growing realism of the theatre of those days led me to a thorough investigation of working movement in agriculture and industry.…My interest in the theatre has never entirely faded, but my movement observation became more acute during all these years and also gained a broader significance. 2
