ABSTRACT

While this is a sourcebook of Laban’s writings, it is important to give some idea of Laban as a ground-breaking choreographer, and thus in this short section I have selected some passages that describe him at work, first, in Titan which was a piece for movement choir, and the first piece to make use of his dance notation. Fritz Klingenbeck describes the process:

My first job was with Titan which was for eighty male and female dancers. I was involved in writing the score which had to be sent to Albrecht Knust in Hamburg. When he received it, he had to learn the script and teach the dance to the people there. Laban came the week before the performance to see how his employees had managed. Through this collaboration we were presented with the first practical problems arising out of the use of dance notation. 1
