ABSTRACT
Of the variables discussed and examined by the Elbadawi-Makdisi-Milante (EMM) model on the relationship between democracy and development, there is significant evidence that the following ‘modernization variables’ have, to varying degrees, influenced the democratization process:
• income level/standard of living; • education; • neighbouring polity; • polity of previous period; and • historical effects of colonization.
