ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the results of the analysis with regard to the three parameters around which the volume is organized, namely ideational friction, great power relations between Russia and the European Union (EU) Big Three, as well as the role and significance of countries and major issues located somewhere in between these two vast entities. It discusses the prospects for a constructive but engaged relationship between Europe and Russia over the next ten to fifteen years on the basis of those results. Bertil Nygren emphasizes the negative developments in the areas of mass media, the judiciary and the electoral process. The chapter examines the origins and reasons behind Russia's diplomatic unease and explores some of the substantive issues and shared interests that are being pursued in a more restricted circle of major powers in forums like the United Nations Security Council and NATO's Partnership Council, or bilaterally with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and, of course, the United States.
