ABSTRACT

Intracellular pH estimates in this study should be interpreted with caution; poor signal-to-noise ratio in the spectra resulted in wide variation in the calculated pH at baseline and during exercise – the mean standard deviation in pH for each participant averaged across two minutes of rest was 0.23 in girls and 0.15 in women. However, qualitative inspection of the data revealed that pH increased at

the onset of exercise in both groups, and thereafter appeared to decrease (though never below resting baseline) in girls while remaining constant in women.
