ABSTRACT

This paper summarizes the importance of Oded Bar-Or for the European group of paediatric work physiology (PWP) that organized international symposia from 1968 till the present, about children and exercise. 2.1 THE LAST TIME The last time I met Oded was on Sunday the 25th of September 2005. It was during the 23rd meeting of the European group of Pediatric Work Physiology (in short: PWPXXIII) in Gwatt (Switzerland). At that conference, although fatigued from his illness and in considerable discomfort, he courageously presented a keynote address titled “Energy Cost of Locomotion in Paediatric Health and Disease”. After the discussion of his talk, I was asked to say some words to Oded on behalf of all the participants, because we sadly realized that this PWP conference would probably be his last, and this was most likely the final lecture of his that we would hear. His wife, Marilyn, was there during the whole conference, and it was wonderful to see that Oded did his utmost to present an excellent lecture for us. In a few words I tried to express the importance of Oded’s work for the advancement of scientific knowledge about physiological principles and clinical applications for children and exercise. It appeared to be his final presentation of many papers and keynotes in former PWP meetings (Farpour-Lambert et al., 2005).
