ABSTRACT

As markets continue to integrate and tariff barriers are progressively eliminated, standards and conformity assessment procedures have begun to surface as barriers to trade. This chapter focuses on technical barriers to trade (TBTs). The first section considers product standards, technical regulations and conformity assessment systems, whereas the second section studies the multilateral regulations for the elimination of TBTs within the context of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This is followed by a section analyzing the European Union’s (EU) approach to eliminating TBTs and a section on the policies and approaches adopted by Turkey for the elimination of TBTs. The chapter ends with some concluding remarks.
