ABSTRACT
In the world of competitive sports one often hears of athletes who did not reach their potential. What this statement usually means is that the athlete had great physical skills (e.g. speed, quickness, jumping ability, strength, timing) but somehow lacked the mental application necessary to be successful. Conversely, there are athletes who do not seem to have outstanding physical talent, but yet manage to be successful at the collegiate, professional or international level. Researchers and practitioners have concluded that it is likely the mental game that really distinguishes elite performers from their less elite counterparts (Orlick and Partington, 1988). For example, mental skills have been shown to discriminate those athletes ‘who get there’ and those ‘who stay there’ (kreiner-Phillips and Orlick, 1993), those who perform on the big stage and those who do not (Gould et al., 1993), and those who successfully develop through times of change/transition and those who do not (Sinclair and Orlick, 1993).
