ABSTRACT

In an important and relatively accessible introduction to their “Marxian theory,” Stephen Resnick and Richard Wolff (1987) ask us to consider the “contradictoriness of the process of theory” that they find operating on at least two levels. Theories may conflict with each other, and theorists may engage in a process of criticizing the theoretical positions of others. Such a critique, in their view, is best presented as a specification of the differences between theories, rather than an assessment of the truth, falsity, or incompleteness of a given theory as presented. This limitation is based primarily on the recognition that each theory has its own measures of truth and its own approaches toward the identification of falsity.
