ABSTRACT
Professor Ito’s chapter presents a comprehensive case study of the “embarrassing exception” of Japan in the arena of international news and information flow. He has brought together rich empirical data to show how Japan, an information importer in the 1960s, has emerged as an information exporter in the 1980s. From a position of “periphery,” Japan has now moved to the “center” of international flow of news and culture.
