ABSTRACT
A central theme of Edelstein’s review is that public opinion consists in considerable measure of what people believe others think. Whether the dominant process is called a “third person effect,” a “spiral of silence,” “group pressure,” “coorientation” or “the rule of the mob,” judgments and decisions take into account what “the public” is presumed to believe.
