ABSTRACT

OVER the past several years, the relationship of communication to job stress has received much attention in both the popular and academic presses. Burnout, a reaction to chronic job-related stress, is often the focus in this literature. It is characterized by physical, attitudinal, and emotional exhaustion (Cherniss, 1980; Edelwich, 1980; Freudenberger, 1974; Kafry & Pines, 1980; Mattingly, 1977). Maslach (1976) describes it as a wearing out because of job demands.
