ABSTRACT

RESEARCHERS have advocated different theories and methods for studying human communication from a pragmatic perspec- tive, especially in research on developmental pragmatics. This area of study offers a rich and bewildering array of studies; many scholars are recognizing, however, that these studies need integration and synthesis so that more adequate theory building and research can be done. In this overview I have attempted to integrate research in developmental prag- matics and to discuss critical research issues that have emerged.
