ABSTRACT

Although interactive media have existed for some time in institutional environments (such as the office, training centers, and schools), they may soon be expanded to reach the broader, mass audience. Many new technologies, such as CDI (compact disc interactive), DVI (digital video interactive), add-on devices for VCRs, devices that respond to TV signals, hybrid telecommunication technologies, interactive cable channels, and broadband fiber optics services, promise to introduce some form of interactive media into the home. As “interactive media” become “mass media” the need for a coherent philosophy of design becomes increasingly important.
