ABSTRACT

Kellermann and Sleight’s essay on coherence addresses the central issue for theories of the organization of discourse. A real strength of the essay is the authors’ appreciation of the fact that progress in this area depends on a clear conceptualization of just what coherence is and is not and on outlining a theoretically motivated program of research. Given the state of the research on coherence, they clearly point out that what is needed at this time is not necessarily more research, but certainly more careful thinking about the nature of the phenomenon and the puzzles it presents.
