ABSTRACT

I would like to do two things in this essay. First, I would like to comment critically on Reese’s formulation of media agenda-setting. Second, while I agree with Reese that power, much as he has elaborated it, is an advance in studying media agenda-setting, I would like to explore a notion of contingency that I think is likewise fundamentally necessary in our understanding of media agenda-setting, and agenda-setting more broadly.
