ABSTRACT

Claims about the meaning and structure of interaction are central to studies of face-to-face communication. A wide array of quantitative and qualitative interaction analysis methods can be classified by the claims they make about the structure and meaning of social interaction (Poole, Folger, & Hewes, 1987). Although these two characteristics are recognized as central concerns of interaction analysis, the relationship between them and the emphasis given to structural or interpretive claims in any given method is less clear and often controversial.
