ABSTRACT

Functional NFkB is measured in the laboratory by an electrophoretic mobility-shift assay (EMSA) that detects its presence in the nucleus. Cell nuclei are isolated by ultracentrifugation, and their NFkB content is measured by assessing the capacity of the nuclear extract to bind to a synthetic radiolabeled oligonucleotide probe and thus to retard its migration in gel electrophoresis (Fig. 9.2).
