ABSTRACT
People shape gardens and landscapes to provide the sort of environments they most strongly yearn for. Changes in landscape design and landscape management inevitably arise out of changes in our attitudes towards Nature and changes in our understanding of how the natural world functions. Garden history, and the history of naturalistic landscape styles in particular reveals a progression of ideas that gives a better understanding of present fashions and points to likely trends in the future.
