ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to examine the role which transport plays in causing environmental degradation. In this sense we are taking a fairly wide definition of the term global environmental pollution and do not limit ourselves to more narrow macro issues of global warming or higher-level ozone depletion. While it is true that these latter issues attract much media attention, for many individuals more immediate questions of higher noise levels, destruction of established social environments and perceptions of deteriorating aesthetics are equally global in their effects.
