ABSTRACT
The Santiago urban region (SUR) includes the city of Santiago, the capital of the country, with a population of some 4.5 million (34 percent of the national population), and in addition a series of smaller cities and towns with populations under 50,000. 1 Santiago is located in the middle of an extremely long and thin country: more than 5,000 km in length and of an average width of 150 km.
