ABSTRACT

The Taipei metropolitan area is located in the northwestern section of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait (see Figure 11.1). It is the political, economic, and cultural center of Taiwan. With an area of 1,895.53 km2, or 5.25 percent of the total area of Taiwan, the Taipei metropolitan area consists of Taipei City and 24 neighboring cities and towns that are highly dependent on the main center. Under the guidelines of the Northern Regional Plan it has developed into an integrated, multifaceted, metropolitan area (see Figure 11.2).
