ABSTRACT

This is an effort to look ahead to transportation issues of the future in the developed and developing worlds. In doing so it is unavoidable to perceive the prospects of the future from the trends and perspectives of the present. I do this in the light of four themes: (1) increasing affluence in most countries of the world during the next decades, (2) a forceful concern for the protection of the environment, (3) an increasing role for telematics in human transactions, and (4) new transportation technologies.
