ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how physical education may contribute to the teaching and learning of cross-curricular themes and whole-school concepts such as literacy, numeracy, science and information and communication technology (ICT) from a learner’s and teacher’s perspective. There are many opportunities for teachers to apply knowledge, principles and values to more than one curriculum subject at the same time and relate them to one central topic or issue. In most cases teachers can organise their units of work and lessons to reflect a particular theme in terms of what pupils will learn from the experience within the unit or lesson. This can enable the transfer of learning and teaching and provide a more relevant physical education curriculum to pupils across Key Stages 2 and 3.
