ABSTRACT

A sports event and its distinguishing features – events can be classified by size, structure and who they cater to under the terms mega events, hallmark events and major events. Sports reimaging – hosting cities and regions rely on their ability to project and sell a positive image of the city to an external audience of potential visitors and consumers, ‘making it more attractive to economic enterprises, tourists and inhabitants’ (Kearns and Philo, 1993:3). The bidding process for major and mega events – the eight key success factors which are required for a successful bid: accountability, political support, relationship marketing, ability, infrastructure, bid team composition, communication and exposure, and existing facilities (Swart and Bob, 20041).
