ABSTRACT

This framework has been presented in detail elsewhere (Scarritt 2008a, 2008b), so only the most relevant parts will be discussed here to show readers how it conceptualizes the state nationalism-ethnopolitics relationship in a uniquely useful way. The framework used here builds on theories of information-energy exchange combined with enablement/constraint-agency exchange to explain relationships between:

1 individual and group actors’ preferences, beliefs, and behavior (micro level);

2 roles, organizations, and institutional rules (meso level); 3 components of social structure and culture variously conceived (macro

level); and 4 individual/group, organizational/institutional, and structural/systems levels

of analysis (micro-meso-macro).
