ABSTRACT

During the Renaissance architectural drawing was understood as a medium to contemplate “real appearance”. Real appearance was not just a representation of likeness but also an epiphany of presence. An analysis of the 1571 hand-drawn ichnography of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, by Tiberio Alfarano, provides clues about the weaving of ideas into drawing.
