ABSTRACT

The field placement component of counselor education programs is usually the culmination of the overall graduate academic experience. As such, students entering your courses ideally have a basic knowledge of individual, group, and career theory and practice; an understanding of the impact of human development; an appreciation of diversity; a sense of the importance of keeping up with research; fundamental skills in testing and assessment; and an appreciation of ethics and legalities. In essence, students registering for Practicum have completed the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2009) core coursework. These national standards stipulate the parameters for the entire field placement component, which is divided into practicum and internship courses. However, you, as instructor, set the tone.
