ABSTRACT

Unlike other chapters in this book, PAIRS (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills), the program described in this chapter, is not intended as counseling or psychotherapy but rather as a psychoeducational intervention. Its approach is one that seems to be less threatening than psychotherapy to men who are in relationships needing mending. Many of the exercises or concepts presented can be adapted into more traditional approaches to couples counseling. We have also found that professionals, once trained in PAIRS, have the ability to understand relationships from a fresh perspective. When providing assistance to couples, they easily become aware of relationship competencies that are missing and can begin introducing PAIRS tools and concepts to fill the void. In the office, this skills-based treatment process is called Office PAIRS. The therapist can offer the tools and concepts that fit as opportunities arise. PAIRS-trained professionals often prefer that couples experience a PAIRS class prior to engaging in significant relationship work in the office. After a PAIRS class experience, the therapist can more easily guide the couple in the use of the skills they have learned for continuing healing, growth, and relationship repair.
