ABSTRACT

Coaching is fundamentally a relational activity, both in terms of the content that is brought and the medium through which change is enabled. The majority of issues brought by individuals to coaching are about relationships. These may be relationships with team members, staff who report to them, clients and customers, key stakeholders etc. This in large part is due to the fact that the great majority of executives have risen to senior positions in their organisations, because of their technical competence and managerial skill, but then find that the most critical parts of their new role are in influencing and leading others, which require high levels of interpersonal and relationship skills, for which they have not had specific training or development.
