ABSTRACT

The objectives of this chapter are to provide the reader with an overview of the male body image. First, the authors will introduce the topic by defining key terminology, concepts, and correlates. Second, important theoretical approaches to researching men’s body image will be delineated. Third, critical psychometric limitations concerning commonly employed measurement tools will be discussed. Fourth, research aiming to provide psychometrically sound measures of influences on male body image will be detailed. Fifth, the authors will recommend avenues for future research and discuss how investigations employing our newly developed scales may inform clinical practice.
