ABSTRACT

The bad news is that the submitted article is not acceptable in its current form. There is more work to be done. Before it is ‘publishable’ there needs to be revising, rethinking and redoing. ‘Revise and resubmit’ makes great demands on writers. It says the text does not quite do the job yet. Reviewers may offer advice about problems, omissions, infelicities of structure or phrase; they may raise methodological issues, citation queries or complain that the argument remains inexplicit. The truth is that very few writers welcome such news – even the most experienced – even when it is understood as a normal part of the journal review process.
