ABSTRACT
In this chapter my main concern will be to elaborate and defend the view that to become educated is to learn to be a person: I am therefore offering a definition of the words 'to become educated'. My reasons for concentrating on this phrase rather than on the word 'education' will, I hope, become apparent in due course; later I will also say a little about what one is doing in offering a definition of this sort.
