ABSTRACT
EDUCATION does not dictate to society: society dictates to education. Most pupils know that schools and universities are primarily factories, whose end products are the passing of examinations, social status and economic security. Teachers and professors also know this, in their saner moments, but they pretend otherwise. Either they have taken Socrates too seriously and Thrasymachus not seriously enough: or, more probably, it suits them to acquiesce in the face-saving theory that education is devoted to truth. This no doubt helps to compensate them for their low salaries.
