ABSTRACT

When thinking about such terms as ‘‘citizen army,” “nation in arms,” and “people’s army,” a number of romantic, even heroic images spring to mind. In these images, the population and the military force are one, and prepared to defend their country to the last ditch with blood, sweat, and tears. Time and again, this idealized picture plays a prominent role in every country. Especially in times of acute threat, the sense of unity increases.
