ABSTRACT
I will start with a digression which nevertheless foregrounds the knot I will try and untie in this discussion of the relationship between cosmopolitanism and the production of locality, the limits of what have come to be known as globalization, and the crisis of transnationalism after colonialism. These topics have been addressed from different perspectives by other contributors to this volume, such as Bill Ashcroft, Diana Brydon, and Robert Spencer, but now I want to reflect on what it means to be a postcolonial subject in the metropolitan cultures of the modern west.
