ABSTRACT

The question “What is women’s studies?” arises from time to time when we talk to people inside and outside the university. Perhaps you, too, have wondered about this new academic discipline. It is often difficult to give a reply in twenty-five words or less, especially after the subject of feminism enters the conversation. Once in awhile, questions such as “Why don’t universities also have a men’s studies program?” are voiced. This book is an attempt to answer these questions about feminism, gender, and women’s studies. We would like to explain, simply and without highly technical language, how the perspective of feminism can affect our ways of knowing the world.
