ABSTRACT

The Federation of Malaysia consists of 13 states, nine of which have a hereditary ruler. The states with hereditary rulers are commonly referred to as the Malay States and they are Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu.1 These Malay Rulers choose from among themselves one who would hold office as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or King for a term of five years.2 This rotational form of kingship is an autochthonous element of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia (Constitution).
