ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews past research and scholarly thought on comprehension instruction, and proposes where we must go next. We ground our thinking in Greeno et al.’s (1996) perspective:

We believe educational research is undergoing a major advance … leading toward a psychology of cognition and learning that includes individual, social and environmental factors … [that] … will require merging and extending concepts and methods that, until recently, have developed relatively separately.
