ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter is the forms and politics of regulation of work in contemporary Australia. We explore the ways that new regimes of regulation affect work and learning through three distinct case studies from very different regulatory levels. The first case examines National Government ‘Work Choices’ legislation introduced in 2006. The second takes a very different approach to the issue of workplace regulation by examining what happened when a new ‘virtual’ regulatory regime was introduced into the car industry. Looking at the issue through a completely different lens, our third example draws on a study of mentoring programmes for academic women to focus even more specifically on the issue of what Foucault (1988) calls ‘technologies of the self ’.
